Mixed Metres and Changing Time Signatures

Learn to count changing metres and organise beats into musical groups. ยท 18 min

Understanding changing metres

A time signature tells you how beats are grouped in a bar.

In 3/4, count three quarter-note beats per bar. In 6/8, count six eighth-note beats, often grouped into two larger pulses.

When the time signature changes, pause and identify the new beat grouping before playing.

Practise slowly with a steady pulse. Count aloud before using the keyboard.
