Rhythm, Dots and Ties

Understand dotted notes, ties and accurate counting. ยท 12 min

Dotted notes

A dot adds half of the original note's duration.

A dotted half note lasts three quarter-note beats. A dotted quarter note lasts one and a half beats.

Count steadily so that the added half-value is not shortened.

Practise dotted-note values.

Ties

A tie joins two notes of the same pitch so their durations are added together.

Play the first note and hold it for the combined duration. Do not strike the second tied note again.

A tie differs from a slur, which connects notes of different pitches for smooth phrasing.
