Intervals and Basic Triads

Recognise note distances and build simple three-note chords. ยท 15 min

Understanding intervals

An interval is the distance between two pitches.

Count both the starting and ending letter names. C to D is a second, C to E is a third, and C to G is a fifth.

Intervals can also be described by their number of semitones, which tells you their exact size.

Building a major triad

A triad is a chord made from three notes: a root, a third and a fifth.

The C major triad contains C, E and G. These notes can be played together or one after another.

Practise playing C, E and G on the keyboard, then play all three together if your keyboard supports simultaneous notes.
